For me, I know its going to be a great day for me when I don’t get Mascara on the bridge of my nose when applying to my Left eye- isn’t that THE worst?
I have a drawer- a DRAWER of eye shadows, liners, mascaras, lipglosses, lipsticks, concealers, foundation, gum and fake eyelashes.
And I have NO idea what to do with it all. They range from HOT PINK to grey.
I have never been the best at makeup- although now, I do feel like I have groove.
When I was in Jr. High- my mom wouldn’t really let me wear makeup. She always said my natural beauty is the kind that the boys would notice. ya, right.
I so badly wanted to wear makeup and feel cool.
I searched around under the bathroom sink, and I found it. SILVER HAIR MASCARA. You know, Shimmery, sparkly, silver mascara- but for your hair.
It had probably been under there for years- as I have 2 older sisters (I am sure they used it when it was considered COOL!). OY!
I knew it wasn’t cool anymore to put it in your hair. And if I had- that would be social suicide. I knew better. I wasn’t THAT lame.
So what did I do with it?
I would hide it in my purse until I got to school. I would leave the house Plain Jane. and wait. Wait on the bumpy, loud bus until I could run into school into the
girls bathroom- the one that hardly anyone used- so that I could do it secretly.
I took out the shimmery, sparkly, silvery hair mascara and I applied it to my eye lid. ALL the way up to my EYEBROW.
Yes. I did. Its true. AND because it was an old bottle (i’m thinkin 3-4 years), it was thick. real thick.
I walked out of that bathroom like a diva. a cool girl (or so I thought).
On the bus ride home, I would take full advantage of the 1 1/2 bus ride and scrub off my glittered eyes.
I did this ,my friends, for an entire year.
The day that my hair masacra bottle ran out, I think a part of me died. no really.
So now, when I see someone who knows everything about makeup- I go all googly eyed.
I wanted to feature one of Victoria’s TOP makeup artists. SHARON CLARKE is Uh-mazing!!!
She is a makeup artist based out of Victoria and she is fabulolus at what she does!! I have had the honor of working with her on a couple of my shoots.
And seeing her work with her clients- she is so beyond kind, funny and well so amazingly talented!!
I just watch her in awe. Little silvery, sparkly eye’d Kari comes out a little bit when I watch Sharon work. But I try to be cool about it.
I would like to refer to her as Michael Angelo of makeup!
If you are planning a wedding and still need a makeup artist for your wedding- make sure you email Sharon! She books up fast- this lil’ lady is in high demand!!
I wanted to get to know Sharon a little better and learn some of her top secerets in the makeup artistry biz- and she so graciously agreed to reveal her ‘secret weapons’
in a interview that we had!
Sharon Clarke Victoria Make up Artist
1.What is a day in the life of Sharon Clarke like?
Busy. I am often times working as a freelance artist for a photoshoot, wedding or with an Indie film crew, enduring long hours and loving every moment of it! That is the beauty of this career choice- each day doesn’t look like the next.
2. How did your career begin in the world of make-up artistry?
I was working at the Willow Stream Spa at the Empress where I would watch the esthicians do Make up applications. I then started asking questions and found that they all had one common thread- attending Blanche Macdonald Centre. This is Canada’s leading school in Canada for Make up Artistry. I cannot praise this school enough. I enrolled for the Make up Masters Program and my Universe shifted! ( My Oprah Aha moment=)
3. In terms of makeup applications, what is your signature style?
I am big on contouring and bringing out people’s bone structure. I believe that it can completely transform a persons appearance.
4. What is the most important beauty advice that you can give to women?
Don’t get too fixed on any one trend. Try playing with make up on an evening that you have nowhere to go. It eleviates the pressure and Switch it up ! Try some new colours, try that smokey eye that you thought you can never wear. You may be pleasantly surprised!
5. What are some common beauty mistakes that women make?
Not using the right tools to apply make up. You can have all the beautiful products imagineable, but unless you have the right brushes to apply them with, they are not being used to their full potential.
6.Who/what have inspired you throughout your career?
My instructor at BMC, Todd McIntosh, who has won several Emmy awards and now based out of Hollywood taught me many practical skills for my trade and more importantly how to be Professional with my clients and colleagues. Each day I feel inspired ‘ in spirit’ when I am applying Make up. I get into a trance and feel pure joy. Dr. Wayne Dyer speaks about this “When you feel inspired, what appeared to be risky becomes a path you feel compelled to follow. The risks are gone because you are following your bliss, which is the truth within you. This is really love working in harmony with your intention.”
7.What are some of your favorite products in your makeup kit?
Cinema Secrets under eye concealer- works miracles and my YABY lip palette. I love the texture and it photographs beautifully.
8. Do you believe that sometimes less is more?
Absolutely! It is so nice to look at someone’s skin and not their foundation.
9. What is one thing you can’t be without?
My Jane Iredale Mineral Foundation. It provides a beautiful, healthy glow and is my sun protection. ( SPF 20) It evens out your skin tone and looks very natural. It is good for all skin types.
10. Do you have a favorite ‘secret weapon’ that you can share with us?
I am a firm believer of skincare. Ladies, make sure you wash your makeup off every day and CLEANSE, TONE and MOISTURIZE. A proper skin regiment can really improve your skins tone and texture.
11. What is the one thing that makes you smile each and every day?
My beautiful family. I feel so blessed to have so much love all around me. They truly are a gift.
