We wanted to do a quick post about how to make the most out of your engagement session – this post ranges from tips and tricks to important information so that you can have the best images possible!
Props are such a cute way to make your images unique and stand out! They help relax the mood between you and your fiancé as it gives you something to do! This could include oversized balloons, vintage bikes, love letters, bouquet of field flowers, etc.. the sky is the limit! You won’t want to have props that are overly complicated. Keep it simple and easy! It is a great way to photograph more of your love and the connection between you! Also, try to incorporate your hobbies & passions! If you are into ballet, incorporate it into your shoot with a long tulle skirt & wearing your ballet slippers. Or if your hubby to be is an outdoorsmen, consider having your session in the mountains!
If you have a wedding planner booked- you can also go the extra length and ask them to style a scene for your session (picnic, beachside canoe romance, camping/campfire scene). It ensures it to be stress free for you and the styling will blow you away!
This is an area where you can be completely creative and fun! Often when people think of Engagement photos, their minds still wander back to faded, tapered denim jeans…..white matching t shirts and white running shoes. If this is your style, rock it. If this is not your style, but what you’ve seen a lot of (or what your parents engagement photos looked like….) please let this be your permission to NOT have to wear that specific outfit for your photos! There is absolutely no need to wear “his” & “her” versions of the same outfit.
Rather, think coordinate & compliment.
Pick shades & tones that flatter each other. If one of you has a busy pattern or fabric, the other should be simple in a complimentary color. As long as you aren’t both dressed in “busy” clothes (patterns), and as long as you don’t clash, generally you will look fine. Tie in a color in his shirt to your necklace. Coordinate his tie to your sassy shoes. maybe your bracelet is the same color as his shirt? Or has a color that is in his shirt? Maybe you have a patterned darling dress on, and he is more neutral. The only rule is to not be too busy & to not clash. Otherwise, have fun. Feel free to also look on pinterest for clothing ideas – there maybe something there that will catch your eye!
You need to consider what setting you would like your engagement session to take place in. And in order to do this, we recommend asking yourself what ‘feeling’ you want your images to have. Do you want whimsical? romantic? comfortable & cozy? cultured? urban feel? edgy? fun? Decide what feeling you would like and go from there! Some suggestions are: a beautiful un manicured field, a grove of trees, down by a river, in your own home, at a carnival, on your parents farm with animals, day-use campsite, downtown…
If time allows, we are able to shoot in different locations if they are close together – remember you don’t want to waste the time for your engagement session driving to multiple locations.
5. Hair & Makeup.
We HIGHLY recommend that you get your hair & makeup done professionally. They know exactly what to do and it keeps it stress free for you! These are photos that you will treasure for your life, make sure that you love how your hair & makeup looks.
Makeup artists also know how to contour which the camera loves!
Ideally we start photographing engagement sessions about 1 1/2 hrs before sunset. This is the golden hour and the light is beautiful!
